Steps to Building a Great Patio
1. Site Prep and Excavation
Proper site preparation is critical for a long-lasting patio. We begin by:
- Clearing the Area: Removing any existing vegetation, debris, and obstacles.
- Excavating the Site: Digging to the appropriate depth to accommodate the base material and pavers or stones. We typically excavate out at least 10" of material for our base and pavers.
2. Use of Geogrids
To ensure stability and longevity, we utilize geogrids:
- Soil Separation: Geogrids separate the soil from the base materials, preventing mixing and ensuring a stable foundation.
- Reinforcement: They provide additional strength and prevent shifting or settling of the base over time.
3. Base Installation and Proper Compaction
A strong base is essential for a durable patio:
- Base Material: We use 3/4 crushed stone, similar to the open-graded stone used under train tracks, for its excellent drainage and stability properties.
- Compaction: Proper compaction of the base material is crucial. We use specialized equipment to ensure the base is solid and level, preventing future settling.
4. Paver Installation
The paver installation process includes:
- Layout Planning: We carefully plan the layout to ensure proper alignment and design.
- Placement: Pavers are placed with precision, ensuring consistent gaps and a smooth surface.
- Cutting: Any necessary cuts are made to fit pavers around edges and obstacles.
5. Polymeric Sand Installation
To secure the pavers and prevent weed growth:
- Application: Polymeric sand is swept into the joints between pavers.
- Activation: The sand is activated with water, hardening to lock the pavers in place and provide stability.
6. Perma-Edge Concrete Edge Restraint
To keep pavers in place and maintain the patio’s shape:
- Installation: Perma-Edge concrete edge restraints are installed around the perimeter of the patio.
- Function: These restraints prevent pavers from shifting and provide a clean, finished look.
